How will the war in Ukraine affect climate change?

REPLACING GAS

Fossile fuel dependency is about security, not “only” the natural world. The sense of urgency is strong. European leaders have proposed fast-track developments of solar energy and tripling clean energy capacity by 2030.

WAR & INNOVATION

Alan Turing decoded the German Enigma cipher machine and saved millions of lives in WWII. Will the war in Ukraine speed up the energy transition? Will this be our generation's Turing moment?

FOSSILE WORLD 2022

China is ramping up its coal production, and the world was not on the right track to cut emissions before the war either. 80 per cent of the world’s energy is still on fossile fuel. Offshore wind could provide 36,000 TWh of electricity per year, close to global demand  in 2040.

SPEED UP DAMAGE?

Offshore wind turbines make low-frequency sound. This disturbs whales and other large marine mammals. It can also lead to collisions with boats and stranding with consequent death. Electric cables that run along the seabed can disturb animals such as eels, stingrays and sharks

ELECTRIFICATION

Knock-on effects mean price increase on minerals and metal. Demand for minerals, will grow 30 times next 20 years. Fast tracking damaging deep sea mining to meet demand and cut dependency on Russian fossile fuel means less time to develop sustainable methods. BMW, Volvo Group, Samsung and Google abstain from it.

A CRISIS TO WASTE?

“Never let a good crisis go to waste “, was a popular quote (credited Churchill) among leaders during the Covid-19 pandemic. Of the $14 trillion economic stimulis measures in 2020-2021, only 6 per cent were allocated to areas that cut emissions. Will this crisis be any different?

Good news

COAL IS LOSING GROUND

Decommissioning of coal-fired power plants is now going faster than the establishment of new ones. This has not happened since the Industrial Revolution.

SHE RESCUED A CORAL REEF

11 year old Madison Edwards made the oil industry to stop seismic activity outside the entire barrier reef of Belize. The largest coral reef in the Western hemisphere.

€ 22 BILLION SAVED BY PLASTIC BAN

The EU has estimated that the environmental costs of their plastic ban will be 22 billion euros less over the next decade.

COVID-19 CUTS CO2 EMISSIONS

2.3 billion tons less CO2 emitted globally means roughly 800 million tons less absorbed by the oceans. Acidification and heating may be slightly delayed.

OFFSHORE WIND

There are more than 2454 offshore wind farms globally. In just two years, this figure has quadrupled, ten fold and more in some countries.

ECO WINDSURFER

Windsurfing board producer Starboard admits its environmental foot print. For every board they produce, 1.1 kg of plastic is recycled. In addition, 10 mangrove trees are planted for each board sold.
